The other week after a particularly rough (but mostly joyful) parenting day with zero childcare (I’m so glad school is finally back in session!), my husband and I sat in front of our TV and put on Adam Sandler’s new Netflix comedy special.
I know that it's "just me", but I do not find the type of humor employed by many of today's comics particularly "funny". However, of today's Jewish "stand-ups", Jerry Seinfeld (for me) is the best of the bunch. As a contemporary of his, I am able to identify with many of his reference points, and find the humor in them. (But actually, my "taste" in Jewish comics runs more towards the humor-styles of Buddy Hackett; early, EARLY Roseanne Barr ~ the self-styled "Cookie Mom" ~ prior to her TV show; a panoply of Jewish "Borscht Belt" comics, whom I was fortunate to see live at various Catskill hotel venues, from the early '70's thru the mid '90's; and ESPECIALLY Totie Fields!!!)
There are too many to list that have successfully made me laugh. In today's world, the Sandman does the trick, as does Alex Edelman! What a great writing today!
At your advice Lior, we watched "Love You". We are Jewish (I was born in Melbourne but my hubby came from Transylvania at the age of 15 and he is now 78 so you can call him a dinky dye Aussie . and we love Jewish humour but I did not enjoy this show. . Don't get us wrong- love Seinfeld I can watch him again and again, Curb your enthusiasm, loved that,. Loved the series Murder in the Building .Love anything Woody Allen has done and loved Adam Sandler in Cobbler and the Zohar but this humour was too left of field for us- perhaps we are not in tune with this type of American humour. We Aussies pride ourselves that we love humour and talk it but "Love You "missed I am afraid.
Yeah, I totally get that this stand up special isn't for everyone!! I'm not sure if it's cultural or generational, I think if you grew up with Adam Sandler comedy albums you knew what to expect, so maybe that's why it didn't strike me as out of left field! Lots of great Aussie comedy out there!
