Let's Chat: What are you watching?
I'm especially interested in your recs that aren't Jewish. Let me explain.
Last Saturday night, at the end of Yom Kippur, I got a fever that wouldn’t go away.
I cuddled in bed with my iPad feeling miserable, trying to find a comfort watch, something distracting that would take me away from my responsibilities and work and worries and instead… wound up watching a show I knew I’d end up writing about for work. “Red Oaks” is the very Jewish and underrated 2014 Amazon Prime series that takes place in a Jewish country club in the ‘80s (for those of you who didn’t know about Jewish country clubs, it’s a fascinating world and I’m lowkey obsessed with Jake Adams’ Instagram reviews of clubs across the continent).
I love “Red Oaks,” and I can’t wait to write more about it here, but that’s for another edition of Jewish TV Club. I will quickly share one fun fact about it now — the show stars Alexandra Turshen, who was in the adorable Hallmark golem movie (yes, there’s a Hallmark golem movie, and I LOVE IT!!) “Made for Each Other.” She plays Misty, a kind of “dumb blonde” country club lifeguard who is not Jewish, and Turshen (who played a Jewish lawyer in Netflix’s short-lived “Partner Track”) has previously told me that sometimes, being a blonde, blue-eyed Jew like her makes it complicated to be cast in Jewish roles Something to think about, especially in relation to all the blonde blue-eyed lady TV talk of recent weeks…
But anyway, I need to ask, what are you watching? And is any of it not Jewish? Because I really need to stop only watching shows for work. Let me know in the comments please, I’m desperate!
