The 76th Emmy Awards are this Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC and I’m excited! I’m not usually an award show person, because they’re often a slog to watch, but this time, Eugene and Dan Levy are hosting and I would watch this adorable Jewish father-son duo do anything. Vitamin commercials, narrating a documentary about cogs, reading the terms and conditions of my new phone plan… you name it, I’m there.
The first video of the two in their fancy two-piece suits (a dapper duo, they are) promoting the show is already quite winning, with Dan kvetching about the meaning of the Yiddish word “glitz,” which comes from the German root “glitzern,” which means "sparkle" or "glittering."
Anyway, aside from these cutie patooties hosting and delighting us with their “bicker-banter,” there are also a lot of incredible Jewish talents nominated on Sunday. Here’s a rundown of the Jewish actors and shows nominated for that winged lady statuette:
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” has received four nominations for its final season. It’s up for the following categories:
Outstanding Comedy series
Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series, for Larry David, of course.
Outstanding Casting For A Comedy Series (an award it already lost to “The Bear” on the Creative Arts portion of the Emmy Awards last week)
Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) And Animation (an award they also lost to “The Bear” last week, womp womp)
The show has been nominated for 55 (!) Emmys over the years, and has won a total of zero, bubkes, zilch, which means if “Curb” loses the two awards it’s up for on Sunday night, it will extend its record as the longest-running and most-nominated show to have never won an award. Even as someone who hates “Curb,” I have to say I’m really rooting for them to break that curse!
Maya Rudolph is up for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for her role in “Loot”
Paul Rudd is up for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series for his role in "Only Murders in the Building"
Ebon Moss-Bachrach is also up for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series for his role in "The Bear,” and I’m honestly really struggling to decide on who to root for in this category
Hannah Einbinder is up for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series for her role in “Hacks”
Jon Stewart is up for Outstanding Talk Series for his stint hosting the show he helped make famous, “The Daily Show”
Alex Edelman is up for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special for the incredible “Alex Edelman: Just For Us”
And there are already some Jewish Emmy winners that we can kvell about from the Creative Arts portion of the award show:
Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series winner Jon Bernthal ("The Bear"), who beat out Matthew Broderick in "Only Murders in the Building"
Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series winner Jamie Lee Curtis for her tour-de-force in “The Bear”
Outstanding Performer In A Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series winner Eric André of “The Eric Andre Show,” who adorably brought his Jewish mom to the show
Benj Pasek and Mark Shaiman won for Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics for “Only Murders In The Building,” beating out Hans Zimmer who was nominated for his role in crafting the score of “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” (which cemented Pasek’s EGOT status)
Maya Rudolph won for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for her work in “Big Mouth” as Connie the Hormone Monstress, beating the lovely Alex Borstein, who was nominated for Lois in “Family Guy”
Some exciting nominees that didn’t win at the Creative Arts portion of the show include Rob Reiner for directing the wonderful “Albert Brooks: Defending My Life,” one of my favorite docs of the year, and our host himself, Eugene Levy, who was nominated for his Apple TV+ series “The Reluctant Traveler,” in which Eugene confronted his Jewish-Scottish family roots.
So, who will you be rooting for on Sunday night? What were some of your favorite shows and roles from the last year? Let us know in the comments!!
Peter and I love that Levi duo, loved everything about Schitts Creek now that is first class comedy
I always enjoy your take on things. I am looking forward to the Levy men(sches) hosting on Sunday. I predict they will be fantastic.
