I have to admit that I’ve been worried about what the state of Israeli TV on big platforms like Netflix would be after October 7. Yet more and more, it looks like the Israel-Hamas War is not making Israeli TV persona non grata on the streaming platform. Since October 7, two new shows have premiered on Netflix — “Bros,” the first original Israeli Netflix production from the talented duo behind “Maktub,” and “A Body That Works,” one of the best Israeli shows made in recent years which deals so movingly with surrogacy and infertility and stars “The Baker and the Beauty” star Rotem Sela, “Fire Dance” star Yehuda Levi and even “Fauda” creator Lior Raz. Seriously, this show is just so good.
And in the past couple of weeks, we’ve gotten news about two more Israeli shows who have signed big streaming deals with Netflix and will air on the platform in 2025.
The first is “Bad Boy,” which just premiered in Israel last week. It comes from the same makers of “Euphoria” — the original “Euphoria,” that is. That’s right, the hit HBO show is based on an Israeli series by Ron Leshem, and it’s also about a group of troubled teens.
In “Bad Boy,” Leshem and co-showrunner, director Hagar Ben-Asher, also follow a group of troubled teens, but this time, they’re in pretty serious trouble, as the show takes place behind bars and features a group of teens in jail. It is based on the true story of standup comic Daniel Chen, who plays himself in the show, while actor Guy Menaster plays his child self, who gets arrested and sent to jail in the middle of the night. (If you want more details, you can find them on Kveller!)
The show looks super dark and intense, and it is already getting rave reviews. We don’t know when exactly it will be streaming on Netflix, but I honestly can’t wait. It’s genuinely so thrilling that a show that hasn’t even finished airing in Israel has already made a deal with Netflix.
Another show that recently signed a deal with Netflix is “Six Zeros,” which tells the story of six people who recently won over 1 million shekels (get the double entendre in the title?? I’m obsessed). They all get sent to a support group to help them properly manage their new windfall and what happens there is nothing short of poignant and hilarious. The show’s stars include iconic Israeli comedian Shlomo Bar-Aba (“Footnote”) and Liora Rivlin, who starred in the OG Israeli sitcom “Krovim Krovim,” who play a couple of elderly kibbutzniks. Roni Daloomi, who starred in the original “Euphoria,” plays the woman who runs this workshop. Rotem Keinan (“Big Bad Wolves”) plays a Tel Aviv accountant with social anxiety and Elisha Banai (“Image of Victory”) plays a Givataim cafe owner. Shani Klein (“Zero Motivation”) and Ofer Hayoun of “The Baker and the Beauty” play a newly engaged couple from the South.
The show’s first season aired in Israel in 2023 and won seven Israeli Academy of Film and Television Awards. Once again, we don’t know exactly when this will stream on Netflix, but it will hopefully be sometime in 2025.
Will you be watching these shows? What’s your favorite Israeli show currently on Netflix? Let me know in the comments.
I'd give anything to watch the remaining seasons of The Good Vop (Ha Shoter HavTo ) on Netflix as only the first season, 15 episodes, is available.
A hysterically funny comedy.
Any idea what prevents the remaining seasons from appearing?
In the first paragraph you said there are 2 new shows currently playing on Netflix. You mentioned Bros, but not the 2nd one. Please let me know the title of the 2nd one. Thank you.
