Let's Chat: What's the best Hanukkah TV episode?
From Frasier Crane to Mickey Mouse, so many of our favorite characters have celebrated the Festival of Lights.
Hanukkah: a minor Jewish holiday, religiously speaking; a major Jewish holiday, pop culturally speaking.
Of course, we all know that the biggest reason so many episodes of TV have been dedicated to the Jewish Festival of Lights — instead of, say, the Jewish Day of Atonement — is its proximity to Christmas, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting to see so many representations of Hanukkah on TV, from the funny to the serious to the heartwarming to whatever you call “Glee.”
Hey Alma has a list of 33 Hanukkah episodes worthy of watching, and Kveller has all the kid’s shows that have taken on Hanukkah (including several new ones this year from the Disney universe). Some of them are really more like Christmas episodes with some Hanukkah cheer thrown in — that’s the case for my personal favorite, the episode of “Frasier” called “Merry Christmas, Mrs. Moskowitz,” in which the Cranes must pretend to be Jewish in order to impress the mother of a nice Jewish woman Frasier is trying to woo. There are absolute classics like “A Rugrats Chanukah," which gave us words to live by (“a Maccababy’s gotta do what a Maccababy’s gotta do”) and there are no shortage of latkes with special secret ingredients, confused non-Jewish friends who know nothing about the holiday, and a nice smattering of Hebrew blessings.
We want to know: What’s your favorite Hanukkah episode of TV? And what show would you love to see a Hanukkah episode from? Let us know in the comments.
Hands down, the Frasier episode “Merry Christmas, Mrs. Moskowitz.” No matter how many times I watch it, I am laughing out loud the entire time!
This doesn’t suck “ Wienerville Hanukkah”:
