All the Jewish TV coming this summer
A Natalie Portman period piece! A show about Kafka! Israeli hotties! Documentaries about Jewish giantesses (is that a word?)! Here's the most exciting Jewish TV to look out for this summer.
June 5: “Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial” (Netflix)
We’re starting off strong with a Holocaust documentary! OK, not the most fun, I know, but this will be a detailed account of the Nuremberg Trials that’s sure to be surprising and illuminating for those who “enjoy” (I mean, there is no joy to be found here, but you know what I mean) shows on the subject matter.
June 6: “Kafka” (ChaiFlicks)
This Austrian TV adaptation of Reiner Stach’s biography of Franz Kafka has been praised by the likes of Salman Rushdie and Ian McEwan, and I am here to add my humble praises as well. It’s eerie and fantastical, dark and funny, well-acted and masterfully written and directed. Simply put, it’s Kafka-esque in every way. It also very much shows how Judaism played an important role in the iconic writer’s life and work, and has some of the best Yiddish theater representation I’ve ever seen. On the 100th anniversary of the author’s death, this exploration of his life and work feels as fresh and relevant as ever.
June 12: “Presumed Innocent” (Apple TV+)
At Jewish TV Club, it is our duty to let you know about opportunities to drool over Jake Gyllenhaal. That’s right, our favorite Russ & Daughters tie dye-wearing hunk is about to star in his first TV show in which he will play Rusty Sabich (no relation to the sandwich), a prosecutor who becomes a suspect in the murder of his colleague. The show is directed by David E. Kelley and based on a book by Jewish crime author Scott Turrow.
June 14: “The Boys” Season 4 (Amazon Prime)
Another Jewish hottie alert! This time it’s Israeli dreamboat Tomer Capone who plays Frenchie in this anti-superhero chaotic show.
June 16: 77th Tony Awards (CBS, live)
So many Jewish shows and artists are nominated for Tonys this year, from “A Prayer for the French Republic” to Daniel Radcliffe and Shaina Taub.
June 25: “Babylon Berlin” Season 4 (MHz Choice)
The fourth and most Jewish season of the German period drama “Babylon Berlin,” one of my favorite shows of all time, is finally coming to the U.S. In this season, which takes place in 1930s Berlin, where antisemitism is on the rise, Mark Ivanir (“Away,” “Barry”) plays Abe Gold, a Jewish American gangster.
June 25: “Diane Von Fürstenberg: Woman in Charge” (Hulu)
We love DVF! The Jewish daughter of Holocaust survivors gave us the wrap dress and so much glamor and wisdom, and this upcoming documentary will take us on a journey through her incredible life story and fashion empire — and honestly, it’s about time.
July 19: “Lady in the Lake” (Apple TV+)
Natalie Portman plays Maddie Schwartz, a Jewish housewife turned investigative journalist, in this ‘60s thriller TV show directed by award-winning Israeli filmmaker Alma Har'el and which Kveller has officially crowned one of the most anticipated Jewish shows of the year.
July 26 - August 11: The Olympic Games
I don’t feel mentally prepared to think about the Olympics right now, but you can bet our friends at JTA will have coverage of all the Jewish athletes to watch for at the Paris Olympics.
August 3: “Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes” (Max)
Two documentaries about Jewish queens in one summer? Yes, please! Elizabeth Taylor was proudly Jewish, an outspoken Zionist who worked on Holocaust documentaries and was even a collector of Judaica. This documentary, directed by Nanette Burstein (“Hilary,” “American Teen”) features 70 hours of newly unearthed intimate audio of the Hollywood icon.
Did we miss anything on your list? What are you most excited to watch this summer? Let us know!
“We were the lucky ones” merits inclusion here. Yes technically Spring release but with so much content people won’t find it until the Summer
I had zero clue Babylon Berlin went past season 2. I watched it on Netflix and it was removed there.
